LiveJournal Erases Porn, Sex... and Fandom.
Shaggirl on LJ was looking at my ancient post on the Bloglines fiasco, where I have a link to LiveJournal's most popular interests page.

She noticed "porn" and "fanfiction" were no longer appearing as top interests, which she found odd, and left me a comment: Could that many people have deleted those interests as a result of the fall-out [...] or has LJ removed them from the search?

Popular interests in 2005:
Writing = 445,072
Fanfiction = 41,926
Porn = 39,597

I just checked most popular interests, which is updated every 24 hours. The numbers are a lie.

In the summer of 2007, "porn" and "fanfiction" were both over 80,000 (like writing, which is currently at 717,724, they had roughly doubled since 2005). That was during the strikethrough panic, when people removed interests.

Now? Both have vanished. Also gone? SEX, which was up there with "movies." You can't find anything more hardcore than "kissing," folks.

Aside from this puritanical clean sweep, popular interests have not significantly changed. Johnny Depp is still the actor with the biggest number. Beer is still more popular than Jesus.

Inescapable conclusion: 6A/SUP is lumping fanfiction with porn and sex. Those who feel 6A/SUP are targeting fandom may not be paranoid after all. Ever have an uneasy feeling 6A/SUP wanted you gone? Well, you are gone, according to popular interests. Fandom, fan fic, fanfic, fan fiction: gone, too.

They missed censoring an interest related to porn and fanfiction, however, which has always had a lower number than either—an interest that would not be showing up if the disappearance of porn and fanfiction was due to natural causes. I won't mention it here, and I'd appreciate it if you didn't. And, no, it's not Orlando Bloom. ;) If you can't figure it out, email me.

So, fanpeople, this is the brave new world of LiveJournal. They even falsify their statistics, to erase your existence, because you aren't the people they want to sell to advertisers. Still want to give them money and content? Then put on your anti-sex league sashes and start turning each other in.

Edit: Also vanished = yaoi, smut, erotica. Possibly hentai.

Technical note: Searches initiated by users never show more than 400-500 matches, because the search routine times out to avoid overloading the servers. The routine LJ runs daily to produce the popular interests page does not have a timeout, so it gives a true result. Unless it's censored.

Oh, Jesus Beer. I just noticed they removed "girls" and "boys."

Edit: Please see updated information here.

LOL sooo not surprised. SUP is the iron fist that will crush the last spark from LJ.

I'm going to totally enjoy watching the fandom ostriches reactions.

Well, they seem to have achieved their other goal:
Third place from the bottom - intelligence 16806

People are more interested in:
alcohol 75604
glitter 56315

than in:
livejournal 43146

"drugs" is on there, surprisingly.

Other interests gone: yaoi and hentai. I'm not sure if hentai was on there, but yaoi certainly was.

No Nazis either! You know THAT's fake, especially with all the Russian users. I used to run a Nazi satire comm that kept attracting Russians who thought we were serious. Used to kind of freak us out. They were FOR REAL about it.

There are some interests, like that one, which I'm sure have always been censored. I imagine "fucking" would show up, for instance, if it wasn't blocked.

That number is more than fan fiction which you cited. And slash is certainly I would think more problematic than listing fan fiction. Could you possibly explain that?

About that 500 cap on searches...
It's not that the search routine times out. It caps out; it stops after the first 500 users (by userID#) who've listed the interest. This cap exists even after they've deleted their accounts, so dead accounts are still clogging up the server.

Newer people with the interest will never show up in searches.

At least, this is what I've gathered by various staff comments on the subject. It's a glitch in the code, a limit that seemed reasonable when LJ was much smaller. As it stands, there's a growing number of interests that are limited to 350 or so users, and that number won't increase; it'll shrink over time as people delete their accounts & leave.

I can't remember if removing the interest "frees" it for another user. Logic says it should, but hey, logic is obviously not a high priority for LJ code.

I'm thinking this might be worth another call to the BBB, or, if someone's got a spare lawyer lying around, a lawsuit for fraud. They're deliberately misrepresenting their business to potential customers.

Oddly enough my profile still has yaoi and gay erotica listed, not to mention the 6 point bold notice saying the journal occasionally has adult material posted there so don't read it and dont tattle to LJ or your Mom...

And I guess the cat pron caption hasn't irritated anyone yet XD

Unbelievable. Than again, in isn't.

I predict

- ads for permanent accounts
- downgrading of features for plus accounts
- price increase for paid accounts
- LJ gets sold
- LJ gone

I have three (as for now) paid accounts on LJ; one is running out soon and has already moved to wordpress, the others will follow soon, either here or to wordpress.

But whatever we do, I think LJ users will have to get used to the idea that LJ is no more. All good things come to an end...

Thanks for keeping us informed.

Wow LJ is like a trainweck that still got enough energy to move back to build up speed to crash again into the next wall.

I'm always torn between laughing or banging my head against the wall. But I lately I am more and more inclined to just laugh. Especially with all the people posting, "that is it, I gave you the benefit of the doubt, but I am gone now/ won't renewing my paid account"

*eg* Schadenfreude

If you look at the raw data page (http://www.livejournal.com/stats/stats.txt) and scroll down far enough, you can see the actual popular interests list. Fanfiction is there, but fandom is not.

pop_interests family 165210
pop_interests family guy 107883
pop_interests fanfiction 96200
pop_interests fantasy 135905
pop_interests fashion 149233

Porn is also there:
pop_interests politics 111714
pop_interests porn 50997
pop_interests portishead 18640

As is sex:
pop_interests sewing 60566
pop_interests sex 277319
pop_interests sex and the city 40159

And slash:
pop_interests skiing 89447
pop_interests slash 68795
pop_interests sleep 114842

And just for fun, "hardcore" is also a more popular interest than "happiness":
pop_interests happiness 43737
pop_interests hardcore 52870
pop_interests harry potter 268051
pop_interests hello kitty 43053

So, you can still search for these interests, and you can find them if you go digging through the raw text data, but on the main stats page (http://www.livejournal.com/stats.bml) and on the page you linked to, fandom has disappeared. So it seems that they are trying to make it hard for people to find this information.

My personal belief is that SUP bought LiveJournal so that they could monitor it for anyone posting criticism of Vladimir Putin, track such posters down, and poison them with Polonium-210.
