ALERT: Use Caution When Naming An RSS Feed
With many thanks to grimmhill:
Do not create an RSS feed and name it with a username. Doing so blocks the use of that username by its owner. Always create RSS feeds with a prefix or suffix such as "ij_stewardess" or "stewardess_rss" and so on.
RSS feed names are treated just like usernames, and that creates problems.
For instance, if an InsaneJournal member had created a feed named "stewardess" for my LiveJournal, I would be unable to get an account called "stewardess" at InsaneJournal.
Deleting the feed doesn't help. My guess is that a purge is required to free up the name, just as it is at LiveJournal. It appears InsaneJournal has never run a purge for deleted accounts (even LiveJournal does it very rarely).
I will open an InsaneJournal support request asking for a deleted account purge, but first people need to spread the word so problematic feeds are deleted by their creators.
If you have created an RSS feed anywhere using an account user name such as "stewardess," please delete it ASAP.
This information needs to be posted at:
07refugees at InsaneJournal exodus_07 on GreatestJournal fandomtossed at GreatestJournal innocence_jihad at LiveJournal What would be the appropriate community at journalfen? fandom_wank?
Please help spread the word. One of my computers is still in little pieces on the floor. :p
A warning needs to be added to the "how to create a feed" instructions at InsaneJournal and other blogging sites. That will require additional support requests.
Numerous technical issues are arising with RSS feeds and friends lists. These problems do not seem to be caused by bugs, but ignorance. We simply don't know how things are supposed to work. We need detailed information on what works and how.
For instance, people are reporting they can't see friends' posts at InsaneJournal. I just found last night you may sometimes have to manually add friends to your default view after you add them as a friend. Go to "My Friends," then "Edit Groups," to do this.
